A hydraulic pump transport concrete along ground lines from a hopper to the location where it is to be poured, following a series of connected pipes and hoses. They haul the concrete around 1m³ per minute, and can reach more than 150 metres across the ground, over and around obstructions and elevations, through and around buildings.

A Boom pump is similar but features a hydraulic arm to lift and place the concrete pipes to areas that are very difficult to access. These are perfect for working at height and where there is a need for direct pouring from above.

All types of mixers have either a truck mounted or stationary concrete pump. Mounted pump trucks are attached to the vehicle chassis and usually go to the site, leaving once they’ve finished. Stationary pumps are usually sent to a site and left there for a longer duration.

How does a concrete pump work?

Concrete pumps transport the wet concrete from the mixer to pour at the location. Wet concrete is mixed in the truck, dumped into hoppers where an agitator continues to move it around and flowing into the cylinder twin piston pump.

One of the cylinders forces the concrete into the pipe on the forward motion, as the other cylinder sucks in concrete from the hopper on the back stroke. Pistons inside the cylinders move in opposition to one another to maintain a consistent and concrete pressure that flows freely. Why do I need concrete pumping?

Concrete pumping is ideal for jobs where time and access restrictions might be a problem, for example:

If the mixer is not able to get close enough to pour concrete to the required location

If you do not have the manpower to cart concrete to the required location

If the pour sites are in a building, underground or at an elevation

Access to my property is difficult, if concrete cannot flow from the truck or wheelbarrowed, do I have to pump?

A concrete pump is able to easily cover long distances, navigate around an obstacle, over uneven ground and through other buildings easily and quickly. If it’s not possible to park a concrete mixer truck close enough to simply pour the concrete directly into the required location, or if you have access that will make wheelbarrowing impractical, concrete pumping is the ideal solution.

How far does a concrete pump hose reach?

All lines of pumps are made of interconnected metal pipe and flexible hose and it’s possible to add additional pipeline to expand the reach of the pumps.

A land line pump could reach more than 150 metres, with the possibility of extension if necessary.

A boom pump may extend to 72 metres with the possibility of extension if necessary.
