Trailer Tyre Maintenance – 3 Tips to Extend the Lifespan of Your Tyres

Trailer tyre maintenance is an important part of your fleet. Typically accounting for 20% or more of the overall cost of your fleet’s tyres, it’s important to properly care for them. Here are some tips to help you extend your trailer tyre’s life:

1. Checking Tyre Pressure

Like all tyres, trailer tires lose air over time, especially if they aren’t being used. Inflating the tyres regularly and using a quality tyre pressure gauge will help to prevent this issue. Always make sure the tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI and preferably before every trip. Oftentimes, trailer tyres have different PSI ratings depending on the temperature so it’s important to keep this in mind when checking them. For Trailer Parts, go to https://autoandtrailer

2. Tread Depth

Like other vehicles, trailer tyres need to be inspected for proper tread depth and any signs of wear. Whether it’s the penny test or an actual tread depth measuring device, making sure the tread is deep enough to maintain safe handling and tracking is essential.

3. Storage

Like anything organic, trailer tyres degrade when they aren’t being used. Leaving them exposed to the sun and weather elements can cause damage that will shorten the lifespan of the tyre. The best way to mitigate this issue is to jack the trailer up and park on wood blocks (or similar hard, clean block options) to elevate the tyres off of the ground. This also helps minimise moisture build up from the ground.
