The Conservative party has taken back claims that Suella Braverman defected to Reform UK due to links with her mental health amidst a storm of criticism.
Statement mistake
The party had released an official statement saying that the party had tried to look after Braverman’s mental health ‘but she was clearly very unhappy’. It was later claimed that the statement was sent out by mistake by a party spokesperson. The statement was condemned by mental health charities, peers and MPs for weaponising and trivialising mental health struggles, as well as its indiscretion and brutality.
The spokesperson later apologised for the mistake and a statement was circulated omitting any mention of Braverman’s mental health.
Appalling comments
The comments were described as ‘frankly appalling’ by Labour MP and the all-party parliamentary group on mental health Sojan Joseph. He said that they downplayed an important issue and undermined the work carried out by mental health professionals, such as those conducting mental health training courses Milton Keynes for companies such as www.tidaltraining.co.uk/mental-health-training-courses/milton-keynes.
A Reform spokesperson refuted the original Tory statement and said it was an affront to many people. It called the claim ‘wild’ and stated that Braverman, a barrister educated at Cambridge, had never had a mental health diagnosis. They added that the statement was a sign that the Tory party was in ‘panic mode’.
Home Office minister Mike Tapp, meanwhile, said that the attack on Braverman was not up to the standards expected and did not comply with accepted British values.
