New York City. City dreamed by many, googled, searched, drawn and photographed. Told in the filmi, books. Sung and decanted. Lived and coveted.
For me, New York has always been a city like any other. I do not think I’ve ever fantasized about it. And even though I often saw the TV series that I loved, I really did not want to go there. Then I was there and I realized that New York must be lived. It should be lived at least 3 months before understanding it. It is not the city that we Italians insist on sanctifying. It is complex, transformational and, in some ways, very solitary. It is not the “dream city” where everything can happen. No. It’s the starting point to go. In addition, leave the chains and try to fly.
Personally, I did not love her. In order to find a suitable point, I walked a long way before being entranced. My favorite points were:
Grand Central Terminal where I stayed at least two minutes staring at the majestic clock waiting for time to stop and people, dressed in old clothes, with cardboard suitcases.
New York Public Library that amazed me with white marble, the guys who studied and a huge book that I pulled out of the shelves. For a moment I really felt like a girl who wanted to change the world.
New York like all the cities are made of colors and smells, and not all of them excellent. Here is my personal New York Colors Tips.
1. The Yellow Taxi
It is not New York without raising an arm and stopping a yellow taxi and screaming “I did it!”. Or at least it is what I did that have also skipped a minute in the middle of the road while another taxi driver shouted at her!
Taxis in New York are more than 13,000 and are yellow by Harry N. Allen, a businessman from the early 1900s. Harry argued (with good reason) that given the New York crowd to see a taxi had to be a recognizable color even kilometers away. The yellow appeared to him as a perfect color!
2. The blue of the sky through the skyscrapers
The first time I was in Manhattan I almost felt suffocated. I’m looking for the sky and the air everywhere, under those giant glass buildings, the skyscrapers, I felt like a rat in a cage. I walked one day with my nose upturned to be sure the sky did not fade. In some moments, the sun was even obscured by the height of these buildings. The streets, in some streets, are narrow and you’re a great desire to be Spiderman and jump from one window to another.
One of the hardest things, in my opinion, to do in New York is a beautiful photograph of a skyscraper. I do not speak of those in the corners of the blocks where you just go across the street, and I do not even speak of the Skyline easily photographed from the Brooklyn Bridge. I speak of anonymous skyscrapers of companies, multinational companies, and centers of interest in New York. those that now New Yorkers do not even realize they have over their heads. Give it a try. Choose a narrow street, narrow, with skyscrapers on both sides, you will notice some anti-fire stairs here and there and a small space between the two buildings where you will probably warn a bum peeping into a trash bin. Do not be afraid it will not do you anything. Now lie down and look at the sky, look for the sun let it reach you, make the blue reflection on the glass of the skyscrapers you will notice that in New York the sky is just like in those Marvel comics. you will notice some anti-fire stairs here and there and a small space between the two buildings where you will probably warn a bum peering into a trash bin. 3. The red brick of the buildings in Greenwich Village
Forget the skyscrapers and dive into the neighborhood full of history, bricks and iron stairs. This is Greenwich Village district south of 14th street. Sung many times by Bob Dylan and painted by unknown artists. I would say that Greenwich Village is the ideal neighborhood for walking aimlessly through cafes and restaurants. I could spend hours photographing the gates or climbing the fire stairs. The jew is priceless to jump, like in the movies, from one of these stairs!
4. The green of Starbucks
Let’s face it!the thing that makes us feel really cool in New York is walking the streets with a Starbucks cardboard in his hand. If we were to do the tour of all the Starbucks in New York and we could even take pictures and buy everything!
Well, to be honest with me, Green New York is also that of street writing. Who is not would like one?
5. The white marble of the New York Public Library
I could not but close with the New York Library, my favorite place in this city. The New York Public Library has been called the fifth largest library in the United States and is the third largest. I do not know the others but this place is magical. It’s in the heart of Manhattan but it’s like it’s in a timeless place. Out of the mess, the tourists, the people running. Inside the silence, the cold, the wait and the magic of leather-bound tomes. The extraordinary thing is the great respect for the public. At the expense of the name, it is a private library, but nevertheless allows the visit to anyone and allows you to touch the books. I know! I’m saying trivial things but to the feeling of being so small, in a place so magical… I felt part of some fantasy book in which everything was alive.
