You can organise a fitted wardrobe into various zones and categorise the different types of articles that are stored in each.
Hanging Clothes
Divide the hanging space into two parts: a long full height hanging space for dresses, suits, and coats, and two hanging rails of shorter height for shirts, trousers, etc. These can be stacked to nearly double the amount of hanging space for shorter items.
Folded Knitwear and Casualwear
35-40cm high shelves are often used for folding jeans and jumpers. This type of storage also stops items from stretching and creasing.
Shoes and Bags
A pull-out shoe rack, placed on the floor, enables easy access to pairs of shoes and saves space on higher levels. Above this, a tall open compartment of around 50 cm in height can be used to store bags and luggage upright. See also Bespoke Fitted Wardrobes.
Accessories and Small Items
Shallow drawers about 8-10cm deep can be used for items like belts, ties, jewellery and hats. Add some hooks inside the wardrobe carcass for items that you use on a regular basis, like your umbrella, or your baseball bats!
Bed Linen and Seasonal Items
Seasonal items, such as bulky winter clothing and bed linen, can be stored on high level shelving or in deep drawers near the top of the wardrobe. This can also be used to store medicines and health items – as advised by the NHS – rather than in a bathroom cabinet.
