Book Printing Options for Self-Publishers

Decisions, decisions! Self-publishing a book can be a very involved process, especially if you get the specifications wrong before you place your book!

Pick the Right Trim Size

Most self-published books are printed as paperback or hardback books with trim sizes that match those of traditionally published books. Trim sizes can make a book look more professional on a bookshelf. In fiction B size books (129mm x 198mm) are by far the most popular. In non-fiction the most common sizes are A5 (half A4 size, 148mm x 210mm) and B6 size books (129mm x 198mm). There are many other sizes used by non-fiction authors, most are derived from A4 or A3. Check out the sizes of similar books to yours before choosing a size for your printed book.

Digital or Offset Litho

For small print runs (under 300 copies) the cost of digital printing is usually better than offset litho printing. For higher print runs (above 300 copies) offset litho printing becomes more competitive and has a slightly richer colour reproduction, especially if your book contains lots of illustrations.

Interior Paper Weight

80 gsm paper is commonly used for books with a lot of text. A lower weight such as 70 gsm can be used for thicker novels, while a higher weight such as 90 gsm can be used for books with lots of photographs and diagrams.

Paperback or Hardback Cover

Lamination on paperback covers is usually 300gsm laminated board, but for hardback covers they cost a lot more, but can make great gifts or for writing memoirs, and last a long time.

Cover Finish

The matt laminate finish is very popular with literary fiction titles. The soft-touch finish gives a premium velvety feel to your book covers. A glossy finish is often used for photography titles, as the high vibrancy colours are shown to best effect.

Sort Your ISBN Early

You need an ISBN number if you wish your books to be sold in shops. ISBN numbers are purchased from a company such as Nielsen in the UK, and then the barcode file can be supplied to your book printer for positioning on the back of your book cover.
